Other "stories" that may include:
1) Opus Dei public indicated their clubs, hostels, etc. is a "disinterested service of humanity" [the talks with Mgr Escriva de Balaguer, Dublin 1968, 47] and "for an answer ... the need to provide suitable accommodation and environment for students ..." Cilic, a spiked chain worn around the upper thigh for two hours each day, except for days of the feast of the church, Sundays, and certain times of year. This is perhaps the most shocking of the corporal mortifications, and members of Opus Dei are generally extremely hesitant to admit that use them. It is a painful mortification which leaves small prick holes in the flesh, and makes the Opus Dei members tentative about games that use swim wherever members of the non-Opus Dei may be.
Discipline: a cord-like whip which resembles macrame, used on the buttocks or back once a week. Opus Dei members must ask permission to use it more often, than do many. The story is often in Opus Dei that the Founder was so zealous in using the discipline, he splattered the bathroom walls with streaks of blood.
Cold showers: The majority of Fellows to take cold showers every day and offer it up for the intentions of the current Prelate.
Food: small corporal mortification of cash from a generally practice at each meal, such as drinking coffee without milk or sugar, no smearing with butter his toast, skip dessert, not taking seconds, etc.. For the most part, eating between meals is not practiced. Opus Dei members fast on the Church's prescribed days for fasting, but otherwise must ask for permission to fast on their own.

Some forms of corporal mortification differ according to gender, as the following table shows:
Numerary Women
Sleep on boards placed over the mattress.
Sleep without a pillow once a week.
No smoking or enter a bar.
The founder believed that women had passions that required more discipline tamed
Numerary Men
Sleep without a pillow once a week.
Sleep on the floor once a week.
Smoking allowed at bar and go with the recruits, in order to draw closer to Opus Dei.
