This is for the faithful followers of "Saint Josemaría.
The level of holiness that the Lord asks of us claimed Escriva is determined by these three points: the holy intransigence, holy coercion and holy shamelessness "(Way, 387). Of the three excesses sanctified by the founder of Opus Dei, you can apply the shamelessness of the holy effrontery to use the same terminology, the process used to elevate to the altars. There was no need for the highest of holy coercion because the court "with a member of Opus integrated into the same-was devoted to the cause. But do not confuse the reader, if layman, as "a thing is the holy shamelessness and other secular freshness" (The Way, 38 .
It took a miracle to make him blessed, and its candidates were taken out one of the top hat, which seems drawn from the pages more lean in our literature mischievous wit. They brought the healing of a "gastric ulcer" and "tumor lipocalcinogranulomatosis" nun suffering from a relative of members of the Work, and subsequently diagnosed by an internist and an analyst, both of the Work.
It was 70 years a nun, Sister Concepcion Bullón Rubio, who never prayed, nor was entrusted to Father Escriva to be cured their ailments. Miracle settled the authorship of the later testimony of relatives of the sick, indeed, members of Opus Dei, claiming to have asked in their prayers to the Father of the Work, to intercede with the Eternal Father to heal sor-Conception . The appeal thaumaturgical not be missed.
In the medical books say that duodenal ulcers often disappear in a short time and can not trace, of course without any supernatural intervention, being very broad case mix of patients overcome this condition. As the tumor, a name commonly associated with cancer, is not nothing but a volume increase of an inflamed part. Many of these abscesses are benign, as I had Sister Concepcion, which will only cause discomfort from compression of adjacent parts. Ultimately, the tumor is not diagnosed with anything but a calcium deposit in fat, which can be reabsorbed, like sebaceous cysts.
Her own religious community where he lived the patient was not conscious at first, the importance that was to have miraculous healing of Sister Conception, so that the nuns have not been able to fix the exact date of the miracle. The very superior general of the Carmelites of Charity Vedruna, Sister Catherine Serna Carandell confessed that he learned from the newspaper of the miracle wrought in a Carmelite nun and thought it was a sister of another congregation.
But the Church requires a second miracle to be holy to those who have died martyred and was unfortunate to miss the birth centenary year of Monsignor Escrivá without submitting to this range. So for all married, Divine Providence, which is in everything, presented the work with a supposed miracle-you must believe in the presumption of innocence of the miracle workers-which is another botch in his second sense, the work done without art or care.
This is the cure-through card of Jose Maria Escriva, the doctor Manuel Nevado Rey, who as a result of exposure to radiology equipment, suffered from "chronic radiodermatitis" 30 years ago.
Medicine is not an exact science but the statistics generated by its casuistry, and a considerable percentage of such patients are cured when they leave patients to be subjected to radiation exposure, which is what Dr. Nevado confesses did. In any case, the condition was not cancerous.
Then there is another aspect to be taken into account the biological effects of faith. Karl Marx, Heine take a joke, had said that "religion is the opiate of the masses", and had unintentionally made a great scientific truth. Indeed, in states of excitement devotee, has been shown from the mid-1970s, that the brain secretes a variety of powerful drugs, known as endorphins, some of which may have significant healing effects. It's like they have done for centuries healers without any of them he has been raised to the altars. Aware of this effect psychobiological, laboratories test their drugs giving half the patients in the test capsules without the active ingredient, and the funny thing is that a percentage of them were cured, without so far have termed these cases miraculous.
None of the above is new to the doctors. The reason that the 60 doctors of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, that upon payment of $ 500 per case, ruled that what happened to Dr. Nevado was "scientifically inexplicable", never know. Unless one breaks the pontifical secret at which they are subject under pain of excommunication and, of course, to do more reporting.
But many Catholics for Jose Maria Escriva is a saint for his devotion, they might take comfort in knowing that the Vatican is not infallible when canonize someone, and there are many who will regularly picking the calendar. The newest, St. Cucuphas. And if ever it was, now more than ever, since the present Pope has disabled the security of the process, charging the so-called devil's advocate, which is equivalent to the figure of the prosecutor in the courts. Thus, John Paul II could become the biggest manufacturer of saints and blessed of history, a total of 1,738 persons, higher than the sum of the canonization accumulated by all his predecessors.
Thanks to this permissiveness Vatican's canonization of Jose Maria Escriva de Balaguer has broken a record for speed in the process, to be beatified when only 17 years had elapsed since his death and ten years later declared a saint.
The saint who created from nothing, that may be applied for "if you have the holy shamelessness, do you care of the 'what will this' or 'what will they say'?" (Way, 391).

To Marc: because this happened, and continue to happen if the Church saints multiplied everywhere, losing credibility
"Road to the altar"
All indications are that early age, José María Escrivá knew I was a saint. He became a priest because "marriage is for the rank and file and not for the staff of Christ ... Fathering is a requirement only for the species, may ignore the unique people "(Camino, 2 .
One highly expedient to become canonized is martyrdom, which does not require the mandatory miracles. But Monsignor Escrivá had rejected that option long ago, when not hesitate to pose as a madman to avoid detention in the civil war. On the Road made it very clear his position: "You speak of death 'heroic'. Do not you think is more 'heroic' to die unnoticed in a good bed, like a bourgeois ..., but to die of love? "(743).
Nor should it be clear compliance with the supernatural miracles that are required to be canonized, he wrote "I do not need miracles: I have plenty with those in the Book" (Camino, 362)
His elevation to the altars going to create a Prelature, which he called a gesture of pride, "Work of God" but in Latin. He was aware that religious orders are striving to put on their altars to their founders, and Opus Dei had the money and power necessary to achieve this. Therefore, always wore next two biographers, called "guardians of the faith", to point all occurrences "not going to happen, I told them as to St. Ignatius of Loyola that were neglected in life and found nothing . A nephew of Father Escrivá was confided to the writer Manuel Garcia came, that before obtaining the marquis, his uncle had confessed: "While the Jesuits had a noble who became a saint, my work has come to a saint be noble. "
And if his biographers were not neat enough, he wrote his catechism, Camino, which reflects your mood better than nothing sexist and paternalistic.
So macho is his work, which seems written just for men. He advises the reader or reader: "... I know man, 'this vir" (4); "Be tough, be manly, be a man and then angel" (22). And indirectly at women accused of having a monopoly on the gossip when he says "you are curious and inquisitive, and window-oliscón: are not you ashamed of being, even the little male defects?" (50). And it is that questions of equality, because "as understood, is synonymous with injustice" (46).
His paternalistic conception is evident in many maxims of Way. "... You need a lot obedience to the director and much docility of grace. Because if not left to God and the Director to do his work, never appear sculpture ... "(56)," Director, you need to surrender, to give you ... in obedience ... "(62 ). Free will and the discernment of others were not in their creed.
He himself, in another gesture of arrogance called himself "Father", ignoring the recommendation of Jesus Christ "call no man 'Father' yours on earth, for one is your Father, to Heaven." However, even on his tombstone reads "The Father".
For the Jesuit José María Martín Patino, a key player in the Spanish transition, Jose Maria Escriva's not a good model of saint because he could not overcome any of the three great temptations that Jesus had to overcome in the wilderness, having the properties , of having to gain power and notoriety.

MIGUEL FISAC REPLIES TO QUESTIONS OF OPUS DEI AWARENESS NETWORK
1) How did you find the founder of Opus Dei, Monsignor Jose Maria Escriva de Balaguer. Describe your relationship through the years.
In 1935, the authorities of the Spanish Republic conducted a policy of outright religious persecution. This persecution of believers created in a reaction of excitement generous desire to improve their Christianity.
I was twenty. Upon returning to Madrid for a Holy Week full of religious conflict, of Daimiel - my home town in La Mancha - a fellow student of Architecture: Casciaro, a confessor told me that he had presented to a priest. This priest had found it interesting and wanted me to know.
He took me to the Residence DYA Ferraz street n0 50. The residence was named DYA because students who lived there studying "law or architecture. But secretly you were told it meant "God and Daring."
This Residence normal function as a Student Residence. There lived some who never knew anything about Opus Dei. Others who arrived after having joined the OD., And others who were current residents and then were on the agenda.
This Residence DYA Casciaro took me and introduced me to Don Jose Maria Escriva. A nice young priest, with whom he had a conversation that I liked. He invited me to return there.
You can easily synthesize a relationship, which dragged on for almost twenty years.
At first, I found myself in a pleasant environment with good and friendly students who were harassing me, even my entry into the Opus Dei in February 1936.
I had only been there three months when I returned to my land and immediately began the Spanish Civil War.
For a year, saved his life, hiding in a roof of the house of my parents. A member of Opus Dei, Paco Botella, I wrote and told him my sister to discover that I was not hiding there. And both followed letters as if they were two friends.
One day in October 1937, came to my house Daimiel a doctor of the Work: Jimenez Vargas. He came to pick me up with false documents, and we left on the train and night, with the money my father could muster.
"After many adventures and Casciaro and Botella, who joined us in Valencia, we came to Barcelona, where he was Escriva and three others. And the eight, after a month in Barcelona and another month in the mountains of the Pyrenees, we went through Andorra to France and thence to San Sebastian, call the National Area.
All of us in the military age we joined the Front. Jose Maria Escriva with Albareda, Casciaro and Bottle - The last two steps give thanks at Escriva entered a military recruiting office - all stayed at the modest hotel Sabadell, in Burgos, where they remained for the rest of the war. I had great sympathy for them, but I was not religious vocation. What went very wrong and wanted to get out. The war was over. Escriva gave us a retreat. He applied to my situation very well. So I agreed to go, but for me it was a continuous martyrdom. This discomfort was mitigated by the friendly atmosphere that was there and my great enthusiasm and professional dedication to architecture. With my work earn enough money, delivering fully to Opus Dei.
I did not proselytize. Neither wanted to intervene in matters of leadership and authority of the work internally. But I always had equal relationship with those who ruled in the RE and lived with them.
2) How found Alvaro Portillo. Describe your relationship with him through the years.
In 1935, there were approximately twenty - mostly students living in residence or spent much of her day and already had links with the OD In addition there were other residents who knew nothing of the OD Among the first was the student of Civil Engineer, Alvaro Portillo. He was my age and entered the work a few months before me. He lived with his family like me. In the first days of July 1936, I attended for the first time a collective act in which they did (I think it was called the offering) the first commitment Alvaro Portillo, José Ramón Herrero Fontana and Enrique Alonso Martinez. (The latter two left after O.D.)
At that time, the address of residence, carrying with Josemaría, the architect Ricardo Fernandez Vallespín and also, Doctor Juan Jimenez Vargas and Francisco Pons, I think a degree in philosophy and literature. Him with his brother, emerged from the work. Escriva The Lord then spoke disparagingly of them. What I do remember having heard from Alvaro, Francisco Pons is that he had intervened in the decision to enter the OD And who presented the Work as the Crusaders with some swashbuckling. And I heard him say Escriva largely domestic use: in some prayers would be carried white cloaks with a red shield in the form of Cross with four ends in arrowhead. (In these and others can attest, today Casciaro and Jimenez Vargas).
In the first year of the Spanish Civil War, all members of the Work dispersed. After many vicissitudes and dangers, some of them were welcomed at the Embassy of Honduras. It was there Escrivá and Portillo lived together day and night and, hence, left the indissoluble union of a tandem that has remained until death.
With the intervention of Jimenez Vargas, who was a battalion medical officer of the CNT anarchist decided that Escriva had to flee from Madrid and move to the National Area. We accompany Jimenez Vargas, would desert the Republican Army, and Jose Maria Albareda. The latter was about to enter the OD They also accompany him: Tomas Alvira, friend of his and who later became one of the first temporary partners, and Manuel Saiz de Los Terreros road engineer, Opus Dei numerary. Manuel left shortly after the Opus Dei.
Why Alvaro Portillo stayed in the Embassy? Do not know. Why, however, to me, an entrant and no particular significance, they came for? After I have come to expect, that knowing the high price demanded by tour guides to help drain through the Pyrenees, as it was good money, and Alvaro unable to produce, came looking for me, because I assumed that my father it would: as it was.
When our flight through the forests of the Pyrenees, we reached the small village of Scepter, we believed that we were saved. That night, Mr. Escriva was passed in tears. I know very well because we sleep in a cold place, it was an old bread oven. I shared with Josemaría one of the four blankets we had. This was, after a tough stage with Jimenez Vargas, at dinner, which Escriva said he was returning to Madrid, because there. Portillo betrayed, to leave alone.
More than a year later, Portillo, with two other members of the Work: Alastrue and Rodriguez Casado, defected to the National Area, Frente de Madrid.
Alvaro and I lived the first years of postwar vocation with my problems and all its vicissitudes. Also I lived in a very personal and direct, route it, first lay y. after priest.
In 1955, irrevocably decided to leave Opus Dei, an institution in which I was becoming increasingly more uncomfortable and I liked it less, because they developed very different paths than I had expected. However, I was away from some friends who loved and still love.
I communicated my decision to Antonio Perez, with whom he lived. He was thus the highest authority of OD in Spain: Secretary General and Counselor of Spain. After a short talk, he said he had telephoned Escriva in Rome. And he had told her that if she wanted me to leave, but before asking me to join him. Which I did by taking the first plane that afternoon. Arrive at night to Rome. I went to pick up at the airport and was told that Escriva had told me to get up late the next morning, he would say Mass, and after breakfast together, talk to me. So we did. I told him he knew that I had no vocation, and he could not keep longer that way. He only told me that talking to Alvaro. And I did. How many times had managed to dissuade me, they thought that this would be one more. I was comparing notes with Alvaro. They felt that I was and I was leaving.
After spending two days there, trying and talking with Josemaría and Alvaro Portillo, accompanied them to the outskirts of Rome. We visited a few students in Castelígandonfo. We walked for me to distract me. They tried to make me change my mind. But I left my position clear.
Already Bruno Buozzi 73, when everything was decided, Alvaro told me in an aside:
- "The Father has said he has to make a trip to Vienna and I am very excited that you, as you have done it many times - drove him. "- Jesus, Alvaro! - I said - I, where I have to go is to Madrid."
Account all these details, my departure from the OD to indicate the situation that was friendly to both parties. Alvaro Portillo dismissed me with these words: - "I, Michael, apologize for the coercion to which you have submitted, but your performance in the Work, has been so generous, we thought you had a vocation and therefore we have done so .
It was, as I say, I left so friendly that even more than two years later, I kept confessing to Paco Botella, the confessor himself was inside OD
I remember leaving with a suitcase, light weight, from the residence of Diego de León to the house of my parents, I thought: "Now Michael, you tell the truth and you will obtain a good person, and nothing more! " This thought summed up the overwhelming moral situation in which I was. With so much secrecy and so many lies and with this indigestion of rules and prayers that life puts on the shirt of fellows OD
Three months after my departure O.D. in a lecture at the School of Architecture, Gardening in a workshop, I met a girl who knew nothing of the OD with which I married a year later.
My confessor, offered to celebrate the wedding, but my wife preferred that the P. Felix Garcia, Augustine, who was his confessor.
I asked two members of the RE Fellows, who accepted, to witness the wedding. But a day before they told me they could not be, because it was not usual: a lie like so many others. Nor ceased to attend my sister's wedding ball, which was also of Opus Dei, 'Antonio Perez sent me a telegram in which the Pope gave us his blessing: This was a document flow that gave the Holy See. when requested.
During the first seven years, I wrote Escriva, his own hand, several affectionate letters that I replied in the same tone, but where he never made the slightest allusion to my wife or my children.
Shortly after my departure, it was tried, as has been done with others who have a collaborative or cooperative as temporary, that I was not prepared to accept;
When checking my rejection of that approach, although my sincere friendship with the people in the OD, was initiated by different members of the Work, a genuine persecution and defamation that began to cause me professional damage: sudden and strange attitudes of customers I had been commissioned work and also professionals who had some kind of link with the OD
Would take too long to explain the amount of detail, a clear demonstration of persecution I suffered slights and contempt with my family, culminating in the performance of two priests of the Work to the death of my daughter six years. Neither Escriva, Alvaro Portillo not tell me anything. Not the slightest word of condolence. The day of burial, Paco Botella and Antonio Perez, came to my house of horror and gesturing me know with more or less veiled words that was a punishment from God for having left the OD
That attitude seemed so despicable, that I broke all the papers and letters that were related to my stay in the RE
With the entry into the government of General Franco of some fellows and temporary OD grew civil at her power, and I noticed in potential customers, who by love or by fear of the OD I do not charge work.
This pursuit, which continues today, reached such a degree that I thought, following the evangelical counsel, tell the Church.
I went to Rome, where a bishop I knew, was a senior in the Vatican Curia. I took data and documents which demonstrated the persecution of which he was subjected to by people laugh somehow associated with the OD The bishop read all documentation carefully and said: "I think you should call Alvaro Portillo, with whom I have often in connection with meetings of the Curia, to say that I've told you to talk with him and I'll speak when you see, because this persecution must end. " I telephoned him, Alvaro began and said: "Don Maximino Romero de Lema, knowing my situation, I recommended that you call rolls to ask you to receive me." "For God Michael!" He said. You do not need anyone to talk to me, come now. " So I did and ¿5 we talked for a while. He promised me that once the chaplain called Spain, which was Florencio Sanchez Bella, and I returned the next morning. I went quiet because I will give orders not to prosecute you. "A few days later came to see me the next morning and although I saw quite cooler than the previous evening, he said," Go calm because I will give orders to not coming after you. "A few days later came to see me in Madrid chaplain who had returned from Rome. I wanted to give a justification. He told me that these persecutions were my findings and my lack of work because people would not like my architecture.
The consequence of this has been, which have continued to pursue me all they could, even persecution continued with my son also named Jaroslav Pelikan.
3) How did Opus Dei?
The knowledge I have today the formation of Opus Dei, in part, I know habérsela heard by the founder himself. Moreover, I have come to rebuild it for news and research known biographies of journalists, which match comments I've heard of Escriva himself and his mother or his brothers Carmen and James, with whom I had considerable interaction, when they lived in what might be called the mother house in the Rue de Diego de León 14, where I also lived with Bishop, Escriva, Alvaro Portillo and some more.
I think Escriva suffered a childhood trauma, of which he spoke very little. Occasionally, while still a child, his father with another partner, collapsed in a business of fabrics that were in Barbastro, birthplace of the founder and violently threw him away.
His father became a salesman simple in Logrono, where he studied high school at the National Institute. Then went to the Diocesan Seminary of Zaragoza, where I had an uncle that canon. A Escriva I've heard that his priestly vocation he owed it to his father. I guess because, due to the economic situation which had been the family could not pay for the course the university.
It seems that after a priest and after a short stay in a village parish in the diocese, was allowed to leave Madrid. There was a contest or competition and was named Rector of the Royal Foundation of St. Elizabeth.
He told me his mother, when after having a fixed salary, Madrid took his mother and his two brothers, had a period of great religious and mystical exaltation flagellated and often heard him since the house was small and her mother commented to her other children, "is to kill."
This situation must match what I heard him mention that he had visited hospitals in poor and they cut the toenails. This date coincides with the idea or the signal: that said it had received on its foundation.
During the time I met him, did not see him ever being with no poor.
One day, Escriva and I spent in front of the Church of the PP Paules, on Calle Garcia de Paredes de Madrid. Bishop, Escrivá said a window on the second or third floor and I said: In that room, when I was doing a retreat, I do not know if he said: "I saw, I understood or knew, - the whole structure of Work" . This was repeated at other times. But he expressed clearly. Nobody, to my knowledge, pointed Escriva, the feature of mystical phenomena or whatever. Of course, he regarded it as a supernatural revelation.
The day before the Spanish Republic will seize the Monastery of the Royal Foundation of St. Elizabeth, Mr. Escrivá asked me to go to church and take out a few pictures of some specific sites. Especially the small window of closing the gate of the sanctuary that was opened so that the nuns received Communion. And then he told me, without me even of the Work, that one day he gave communion to each of the nuns at the Sacred Host to give each of them, when he thought to himself: "I love you more that it "felt the Lord say, as the adage:" Actions speak louder than words. "Because he had not done anything to implement the OD Despite several years since that day indicated .
Escriva's confessor, I think it was called P. Sanchez SJ, I, I did many times Escriva chauffeur, I took him to a house to visit the Lord. And was this Q. Jesuit who, when hearing these events, he said: "This is a work of God". Name that Escriva taken as typical of the Foundation.
I remember one day I took him to see this confessor, Escriva to return to the car, I said "Good lord, I am embarrassed by the compliments that my confessor told me!"
4) What individual, if any, helped in the formation Escriva of Opus Dei?
I know no one to help him Escriva, in a direct way, in the foundation of Opus Dei. Yes at various stages of approvals canonical: Alvaro Portillo first and after some jurists as Opus Dei numerary Antonio Perez, Amadeo Fuenmayor and do not know if any more.
In the early days, I heard him say Escriva, who had been, a dozen priests, who said that since the day they promised him obedience, began to disobey. The only one I knew of these priests in Residence DYA, was Don Lino and killed him in Madrid during: civil war.
5) What was the reason Escriva Balaguer to add your name?
I guess that interest in attaching importance to his name, was related to trauma, child of which I have spoken. It is easily checked Escriva live with his great affection for the aristocracy: Marquises, Counts, etc.. And as some of these characters were related to some nuns of the Royal Foundation of St. Elizabeth and he was the Rector, when the nuns was introduced to some of these aristocrats and heard that his name was Escriva once familiarly asked: "Escriva of Roma?, (known aristocratic family) And tell him that no, they showed a blatant denial that he gave him tremendous discomfort. This is not a guess of mine, this is what I have heard Escriva himself, who decided to take her last name, possible origin of "Balaguer", the Catalan people. And she said this plugin. I witnessed the collection of documentation that was made for presentation at the Ministry of Justice for approval. Procedures that in general, had no difficulty.
6) How do the priests and lay people reacted to the Opus Dei?
Knowledge of Opus Dei, both priests and laity, was not made in a public way, but individualized and required great discretion when it of. The reaction was strictly personal. Positive or negative depending on the case.
When some members appeared publicly in politics, the reaction was also quite varied and still is. The reaction, in general, depended on the attitude that they had received. Whether you were believers as if they were not. As at people today, also depends on how advanced or backward position that has the believer.
In the early years, in which the O.D. presented an advanced approach to modernize the Church, its adherents were those who wanted such renovation. After Vatican II, the sign is changed rolls are the most conservative and those who see the OD sympathetically.
7) How did you enter the Opus Dei?
After Casciaro Escriva submit to me, as I told, I was assigned a fixed day each week to attend a one-hour meetings that Escriva was some very small groups of students.
"In those talks, around a table, read and commented Escriva's gospel week. I also went smoothly introducing the fulfillment of some rules are made mandatory in the RE: Offering works, prayer, sacraments and review. Then there was talk a while as a talking shop. In no case was referred to Opus Dei. Knowledge of O.D. was made directly and personally, in great secrecy. But saying it was not secret, but simply discretion. Since you do not going to tell our family intimacies to anyone.
Without attracting attention, but rather saying that it was to have a better understanding of each one of us, we did half affiliation: name, parents, study or profession and hobbies and sports. I remember in my hobbies and I put the music that I liked painting, and between sports, skiing.
A few days after filling this form, arriving one afternoon, Escriva and some more I had a big frame around 1 '50 X 2 meters, with a huge blank canvas and asked me to do a table for dining.
I went to the zoo to take some notes and started to paint some very large deer in a forest with lots of green and blue. As it took to fill it enough, I had to go many evenings. Escriva sat beside me and we talked about many things while I painted.
In one of the first session he told me, as a sign of confidence, their approach to Opus Dei: I said what I said for anything personal, but would ask the Archangel Gabriel who, like Tobias, lead me to a girl pretty and rich to get married. "O. .. for if the Lord asked me more." This was a phrase he kept repeating in similar cases.
I took a big concern. But he told me not to worry and that, as I suffered pangs of conscience, he would help me to banish them, and she was quiet.
Bottle Francisco Casciaro and as I studied architecture and living in the residence. They had entered the Work and harassment began with a tremendous to me, that I also entered. I told them that I was going with Josemaría. He was calm and ready to enter anything.
I lived with my brother, military rather older than me, in an apartment with two maids older than my mother had sent us from our land.
My brother, who often played the National Lottery, it was the first prize, 100,000 pesetas. At that time, this amount was very important.
A few days later Casciaro phoned me to tell me he wanted to talk Escriva. I was afraid to seek my money, the economy of the residence was very broken and when I arrived, just enter in the office, Escriva said, "I think you're calling." Breath to see that I did not want the money from my brother. But I had no courage to refuse, although he was far from feeling the slightest enthusiasm. Since then felt a nightmare that knew how to shake off.
This is how I joined in Opus Dei. I have not heard anyone do it that way.
What were your responsibilities and duties as a member of Opus Dei? If changed over time. Describe the changes.
When entering the O.D. became a triduum. He wrote a handwritten letter asking for admission. The first thing Escriva said was: "The supernatural reason to meet obligations is" because everyone he wants. "This was not a mandate. The strongest thing they could say was that if you did please do this. That is, all obedience, "theoretically" rested on a voluntary basis. It was a beautiful thing to express. But in fact, had an enormous amount of coercion.
Theoretically if you want, he lived in a house of OP Actually I have met some: as Rafael Calvo Serer or Alberto Ullastres hardly ever lived in a house in the works, although it was considered of good spirit. Now I do not know will happen. I think it must be different. So I think my time was also different between the first and later admitted.
There were some rules, some acts of piety daily mandatory. For those who in good faith wanted balanced with a strong professional work was a true martyrdom almost impossible to meet. An offer of Works, half-hour 'prayer, Mass and Communion Angelus, the fifteen mysteries of the Rosary, spiritual reading, another half hour of prayer. Visit 5S.Sacramento, Preces and soul. Continuous presence of God with fervent prayers, looks at the image of the Virgin, and so on.
For me, now seen from a distance, I could say that Faith had been replaced by pity. For religious piety. No mercy for our neighbors that did not appear anywhere, especially if not from the OD Economically, gave everything he earned. Then, the costs had to do: locomotion, and so on. justified in detail the end of the month.
Each week we had a confidence with the head of the house that must be treated in all matters relating to professional issues, etc. apostolate., Everything but the sins confessed to a priest every week of the Work. There was a meeting of those attached to that house, which was chaired by the head lay, with the assistance of the priest of the house as one.
Each month they did a retreat on a day generally festive. It was led by a priest of O.D. It was more or less privacy, as those who attend. Sometimes even. people not belonging to O.D.
Each year, they made a retreat with 4 or 5 days, following the guidelines of San Ignacio de Loyola.
I have no idea what the young people now. Neither he nor when they belonged to the Work. Because voluntarily tried not to be aware of the whole structure of the organization. Although, when it knew that the internal organization, designed and evolved in the thinking of Escriva and Alvaro Portillo, had nothing to do with the provisions of an administrative and religious for approval arose in the First Diocesan and after the Universal Church. Numeraries the unknown.
9) Your stay at the Opus Dei affected his personality and his relationship with 'their family.
In my case, my personality had little effect. Because higher tolerated me more independent personal action than was common among members of the Work. They were more linked to internal problems, especially proselytizing.
Perhaps, my natural inclination to intolerance and my temper, far from corregírseme, I think it encouraged me. Keep in mind that the internal situation in which I was, I was inclined to anger a vice that cost me time after correction.
With my family, my main relevant fact was not living with them and not being able to give at that time because there was no canonical approval, a clear explanation of why he made that determination. Although all the vicissitudes of my way to another war zone, explained something of the situation. Later, some relatives have told me, the estrangement that during those years I had with them.
When the Civil War, Escriva wanted to go to my village to greet my parents and we were there a couple of days. Also, of course, met my sister Lola. And he had a bad attitude with a priest there, because he thought had treated him with little deference. Upon returning to Madrid, he said his thinking was that I wonder: What if my parents would be pleased that the remains of his father, he moved to our family plot in Daimiel. Question that I sent to my parents. They surprised as I had no trouble. But that issue again to talk more. In the many car trips I had done with him because he liked to travel by car and speed, but without much interest you get anywhere, or watch a. Beautiful landscape, nor hear good music, "but hum songs frivolous. On one such trip to Logroño, wanted to go to the cemetery where, in a simple grave, his father was buried.
Shortly after that visit to Daimiel, wrote a letter suggesting that my sister came in Opus Dei. She was the first woman who entered the O.D. in this attempt to start the women's branch that had previously failed, think twice. This could be called "sisters" of those who were already there. They entered four or five sisters of cash: Jimenez Vargas, Rodriguez Casado, Paco Botella etc. But I just think that was the end Lola.
10) How long was a member of Opus Dei and what were the reasons that led him to quit?
The day I called Escriva, was on 27 February 1936. And the day I left, 27 September 1955.
The reasons, rather than abandon, arguably, the reasons for wanting to have continued so long since the first day, not having entered.
It is clear that I shall always - starting with my entry in Opus Dei, a coercive way, as inadmissible. It is also true that my enthusiasm and my desire for collaboration gave rise to me coerce. A Escriva the greatest impertinence told anyone in the RE had said. But all of them related to art and architecture, especially religious. Our disagreement was so great that, during construction of the headquarters in Rome, Monsignor Escriva banned me for me over there. I could not even do it for professional reasons independent of the OD
I have to accept that these discrepancies, the concept and not only artistic but also cultural, influenced my slow departure from the approach, we could call on all theological and supernatural nature of the OD
As the OD grew in size and power, to me as I was undoing supernatural phenomenon.
In the end, the Work, grown as expected, since I always had a universal vocation. From the days when the work was poor and simple, we felt strongly that become very important civil and religious. But what, finally be a machine to generate power. I could see that she could be, the means of salvation of the Christian world.
11) Are you aware of the beatification process for Mon. Mr. Escriva?
When he began the process of the beatification of Escriva, also began publishing a newsletter, giving an account of the vicissitudes of that process.
They sent me the newsletter and always he was aware of everything. Then I realized, that the person presenting this process, did not respond at all to the reality of Escriva whom I had dealt with privacy. And I believed in the moral obligation to try to declare in that process.
12) Were you able to testify in the beatification process to the Court of the Causes of Saints?
The place in which diocese began the process of the beatification of Escriva was the Archbishop of Madrid-Alcalá. The Cardinal Tarancón regia, with which I had some connection. And I say that, I had known very closely Escriva, and conscientiously believed to be declared. He told me he was fine and that she would speak with the Clerk of Court, that I include in the list.
A few days later, I said I would not testify. But to write him a long letter to him. So I did. Send a letter telling him to do the use it saw fit. After a few days, he answered another letter saying he had received mine and thanked me on behalf of the Church and his own.
13) What was the attitude of the then Cardinal of Toledo (Tarancón) in relation to his testimony at the Beatification Process?
Cardinal Vicente Enrique y Tarancon, this is his full name has not been Cardinal of Toledo, but the Cardinal Archbishop of Madrid-Alcalá. Their behavior with regard to my statement and frustrated after learning the details of his performance, I feel very bad.
The court process, with an obvious lack of impartiality, I wanted to eliminate me, because I knew that my views would be totally objective and first-hand. Because I was not going to stop judging whether what he said favored or hindered the cause. I would logically act as a Christian should act. I had no other purpose than to lay off my conscience.
A few days after having opposed the court's process to accept my statement, I called a former member of the OD, Alberto Moncada, a sociology professor who had published several books critical of OD and said: "I have called to testify in the court process for the beatification of Escriva. Do you understand that?"
I replied: "I understand perfectly. You have known very far to Escriva. Your opinions, possibly, will be very negative - the more negative, the more they like it." Because of you out of Opus Dei, you will withdraw from the church. Only serve to introduce as a hostile witness. These gentlemen have a very lucid sample to contrast with the abundant laudatory statements that want to introduce. "
A few days before the beatification ceremony celebrated by John Paul II in St. Peter's Square, in the Spanish press were quite a stir. It triggered many opinions. And in a prestigious television program entitled "The Key", was intended to address the issue of the beatification of Escriva and I was called to intervene. I replied that in good conscience should accept, even when I did not want to say anything he had to say.
The program was developed over two hours. Statements were made, the vice postulator of the Cause and the Dean of the Faculty of Theology at the University of Navarra (priests of Opus Dei) and a tenured member of the RE reporter There were also two independent journalists. One had written a critical biography of Monsignor Escrivá. A nephew, the sociologist Alberto Moncada, and me.
The program had a huge impact, which was echoed by the press. I went there a long time very bitter. But all viewers were convinced of my honesty. From this I have had and still have, testimonies of believers and nonbelievers. He who spoke the truth, knowingly, I was. And I say this without the slightest satisfaction and with much sadness: With the same frame of mind to answer these questions you've sent me and that, as on that occasion, I would rather not have them to answer. But I am convinced I have a moral obligation to do so, for the good of the Church.
After the television program, the newspaper "El País" got some secret pages of the process of beatification, which were kept in the Vatican. They explained why he had the Court to eliminate me as a witness.
I quote verbatim the secret testimony of the Process.
Text # 2, Bishop Javier Echevarria.
As was reported that promoter of justice, Tarancón Cardinal told him that Mr. Fisac, while he submitted his letter, said the Cardinal Tarancón serious doubts forward to testify, revealing his contradictory behavior, characteristic of its instability emotional and temperamental.
This is not true. Lie Cardinal or Archbishop Tarancón Echeverria. I said I was having to testify. But, in conscience, he had to testify, given the amount of falsehoods contained in the process.
"Nor do we call him, because we know that a person is mentally unbalanced: scruples pathological manifestations of obsessive character and situation of permanent anxiety-like persecution complex subject himself acknowledged in an interview to the press, which offers no guarantees to give objective testimony.
Among the falsehoods contained in these findings of Bishop Echeverria, the only truth is the state of permanent anxiety I had during the nineteen years and eight months for wanting to leave there without success. Nor could consult with a priest from outside the work, because we were told not to do: "Dirty laundry is washed at home" and had been a lack of loyalty on my part.
And as for the pursuit of which I was subjected, after marriage, was not mania, as it is documented in Rome showed to the Bishop Romero de Lema and Alvaro Portillo.
As for my alleged emotional instability and temperamental as when a person says I'm mentally unbalanced. That says a person with whom I do not remember ever spoken. Unless you were one of those young people who saw the group and never tried nor knew what they were called.
Copy other paragraphs of the process:
Text # 2, Bishop Javier Echevarria. 2343 (p. 765)
"I remember another case, this time it is a Spanish architect. He called the resignation in Opus Dei before the Spanish civil war, and, while left-spiritual help was playing an effective role. Over time and deceived by some successes regarding his profession, sought to break free of what began to seem harsh demands. It was good man, but hard-headed. The master left empty by a superb and committed great imprudence.
1. I did not ask to be admitted to Opus Dei. I called and I was coerced to enter.
2. Why does Bishop Echeverria I went to play an effective role? Why making money?
3. What is called Bishop Echeverria some relative successes? What do I granted the Gold Medal at the Exhibition of Religious Architecture in Vienna (1954), the first international award which flourished in Spain after the war and appeared in dictionaries and professional journals around the world?
4. What were these demands hard? I could do whatever I wanted, to travel around the world, just like I did, go where I pleased and when he wanted; clear that everything I did that for professional reasons. The requirements imposed on me the self.
5. Do not remember anyone telling me who committed serious indiscretions. What were these indiscretions? I want to remember: One time I went to Rome, and strolling around the house with Josemaría and Alvaro Portillo told me, very indignant, they were unhappy with those who ruled in Madrid, specifically Casciaro. I found myself trying to deposit a greater reliance on domestic issues on the agenda When I returned to Madrid as a loyal friend I thought I must let him know Peter, those rules and Escriva Alvaro Portillo. And that bothered them. They thought that I was person who could be trusted to keep such secrets, which I was very happy.
2344. - (P. 766) The Servant of. God called him to Rome on several occasions, to make him understand that his path was clear and should be decided to be assisted. It was then that he began to suggest that behavior problems had more than his head. It helped him get over that bump, but declined to accept more help. I have seen the long hours of attention he devoted to the Servant of God when they began their vocation crisis. She was always very grateful, but it was closing all help.
Indeed, Escriva called me several times to Rome. But in any case to try my spiritual problems. He called me to study professional problems in the Central House of Rome.
I do not understand this about my behavior problems were more than headaches. What were those ways? This Bishop has invented a lie, meaning veiled dirty: that's slander.
As always showed me grateful, indeed. Like any well-bred person I am grateful tokens of affection at all had with me.
I was closing any help because he wanted to go. And I wanted to go, because he had lost faith. But because he wanted to leave the organization that every time I liked least as clean and Christian institution.
Bishop Echeverria says he witnessed the long hours of attention it gave me the servant of God. I do not know where at all that he says he saw without seeing me. But no explanation could be that as a person as "mentally unbalanced",
Escriva was made partner Elector (the highest rank of the tenured members of the time)
He also wanted me the only Partner Secular Society of the Holy Cross. The promised me to calm, that I wished to ordain priest in the Priestly Society of the Holy Cross had a partner who was not a priest.
I have known very directly, from among the members of Opus Dei who lived with me, the appointment exercised by Escriva capricious of what would have been ordained priests and what not. In an attitude of play and denying the most basic freedom. Of how some who were real desire to be priests, as Valencia and Fernando Vicente Rodriguez Casado were never identified, and many others, who say they were going to order, they created a strong spiritual distress. Many of them were dragging the embarrassment until it left the OD and managed to pass to the lay state.
One Sunday I was at breakfast at the home of my parents, Alvaro Portillo called me urgently. He said he wanted to talk Escriva. I returned to the headquarters of Diego de Leon quickly. It would pass in the Roman Curia, the Priestly Society of the Holy Cross. Escriva said he wanted a partner that would permanently lay in it and wanted to name me. So I asked him if he could say no. He said yes I could say no. Then I said: "Not!" and retired.
When late in the afternoon we attended the Blessing of the Blessed Sacrament in the Chapel, as every Sunday, at the exit, Alvaro Portillo told me, "What a disappointment you have given us the Father '!
And I wonder: Why would I want Escriva a balance in a place so unique? Produce very sad that people like Bishop Echeverria, using a religious institution approved by the Pope, and seriously malicious lie, knowing that lie.
Text No. 2 Bishop Javier Echevarria, 2334 (p.766)
At his insistence, he was granted immunity, because he would not acquiesce to any reasoning. Over time, between his misfortunes and his professional failures, have been thinning their character and ideas, not hesitating to define himself a man of peculiar conditions.
Once resolved I left Opus Dei, and after returning from Rome to go to my parents' house. Last night I slept in Diego de Leon, arrived late, my confessor Paco Botella. (He lived in another house of Opus) And he said he had received a letter from Father would not be taught, but I was going to teach. (This was a way of saying things obliquely, much to the use of this institution.) In that letter, Monsignor Escriva said, he was sorry that I left, because what would happen would be a terrible and unfortunate.
And that was not a prophecy but a desire Escriva, their children and partners OD have tried by all means make come true.
However, thank God, my marriage could not have a cleaner development and happier.
Intended vilely implement my daughter's death, caused by a vaccine against polio. And then have tried with all its potent power, discredit and isolate myself professionally as they have a great economic and political power.
Text No. 2 Bishop Javier Echevarria, 2344 (p. 766)
He relates as an example, the eve of their First Communion, as he understood that fasting was forbidden to take anything, spent the whole time to avoid swallowing saliva spitting.
This story has been told me on several occasions. And it is a demonstration of abnormality, all that shows is the rigid imposition of fasting, which our Holy 'Mother Church subjected its faithful, from midnight on the night of yesterday, until the next day which was communicant.
Text # 2, Bishop Echevarría 2344 (p.766) has been proclaimed defender of divorce because he says the Church can not impose this requirement on those who have no faith, and well-with such approaches now, "he reasons.
I am not a proponent of divorce, I am a defender of freedom of conscience.
It is sad that while these mosquitoes sneak Pharisees, love a neighbor, who is not 'of the Work, is totally lacking in spirit and in the conduct of members of Opus Dei.
Text # 2, Bishop Javier Echevarria 2344 (p. 766).
I can assure that the Servant 'of God always helped him with heroic charity. She prayed for him and always wanted it, forgiving slanderous statements made.
Escriva tell directly that I had very bad taste. That he knew nothing about architecture or music or culture in general was no slander.
For many years, the construction of the Headquarters of Rome was a matter of utmost importance to Escriva. He demanded a general mobilization of all partners, to find money. He invested millions and millions of little luxuries artistic quality: but in the Renaissance manner. Frivolous because these details were for him of a capital interest.
14) Do you want to add some additional comments?
In all these events that I have found wrapped and realizing the responsibility that I contract my views', they try to be as objective and dispassionate. I gave a thorough review of what I lived next to Escriva and the actions I have witnessed, with the express desire of not wanting to judge them.
- Escriva was a very complicated personality and very disconcerting.
- Mortified and mortifying.
- Emitting very harsh judgments. I do not speak for anyone, inside or outside of the Work, (some of their trials sickened me) do not remember having heard good things rather than Alvaro Portillo. With special critical sense of the clergy, monks and nuns.
- He was owner "of his invention" the spirituality of Opus Dei - to the point of resentment felt by the welcome he had a book by a priest of the RE: Jesus Urteaga, which was titled "The value of divine human "and that rarely was the page that did not cite any maximum Way.
- I was fully convinced that he had been chosen by God to fundamentally reform the Church from its head. She was as overwhelmed with so many graces received undeservedly.
- Although this humility, which I saw expressed in cases in which he praised and he controlled the situation, not the ever observed in cases where other, more or less consciously and explicitly what had been humiliated.
He was increasingly convinced that it was important: During the years that I lived with him, that conceit was increasing.
On one occasion, some of the major told us that he had spoken with some Jesuits who complained that the first who lived in San Ignacio de Loyola, was not considered interesting to preserve objects, buildings and places where important events had occurred . And we'd be fools if we did the same.
In the story that I explained earlier, last night in Rialp, there is one fact that I almost did not I perceived, and then I saw him tell Escriva in a somewhat difficult because I wanted to say, but I wanted it appear that he did not say.
That night. When he was with great sorrow for having left Alvaro Portillo on the dangers of Madrid. And before the violent imposition of us all and especially Jimenez Vargas who threatened him saying, "I happened to you to another area if I have to drag by the hair," Escriva asked the Virgin following signal: That winter, at that stage in the Pyrenees, to grow a rose.
The next morning at dawn Escriva oven and left that took a turn around. There were remains of a chapel that militants had set fire to Republicans. And passing inside, he found destroyed the wooden altar and a wooden rose gold. Rosa that he took and that I could see then in the window that was full of memories in their private rooms of the Villa Central Rome.
After many years out of Opus Dei and I have not seen a doctor and professor of Physiology, Jimenez Vargas, he called to say he wanted to talk to me. And it came to my studio with a collection of photographs of the entire area of the Pyrenees, the oven, the Hermitage and the different places he had crossed.
He said they were buying all those places to keep them as relics.
The question he wanted me was whether he had photographed the ladder to climb to the furnace, it was true.
All this showed they had taken very seriously the idea of preserving these memories. And Escriva lived in those days.
In reality, what is the spirituality of Opus Dei? I would say that between the classical description of ascetic spirituality and mystical spirituality, which advocates living in the RE is the ascetic. Subject to strict rules of piety and penitence: time histories of prayer, and in sackcloth and disciplines, and sleep one day a week on the floor with a pillow book. This life of mortification is also tempered by regladamente comforts and luxury, as required in the houses where they live, in personal clothing, etc.. Some maids will make your bed, you serve the food, etc..
The intention of ensuring that everyone living with and showcasing services equivalent to those of the people of the same profession or social status, has become a way of life much better and more showy and flashy.
But in its essence, what is it that brings this whole fabric of spirituality? Fruits. What are the benefits? The fruits are a great company mundane.
One day, because I will never forget the bitterness in my soul, I went to see a fellow that I had while studying high school and told me his family's financial situation, desperate, and asked me to lend him money. I told him to come back the next morning. Because this decision I could not take it for myself. I checked with my manager, and he forbade me at all, to give him anything: he was forbidden to spoil the spirit of OD
Of course, comply with the rules and sleep on the floor is annoying: but 'does good to men.
There is an issue that I have lived very tangentially: the education that is of utmost importance in today's Opus Dei.
I heard him say many times Escriva, the founders of religious orders and congregations had appeared to resolve situations of great social need, to care for elderly and destitute children, to redeem prostitutes. But their successors, after they had finished doing big business, based on schools to educate children of the rich. And these last words emphasized with great relish.
However, I attended Gaztelueta school building in Bilbao, who said he was the exception, because she had asked Escriva, Pedro Ibarra's mother, Marquesa de Mac-Mahon.
Next - and, while I was out of O.D. I checked the different course that has 1tomado the development of the Work. Schools have been organized and more schools for rich kids. And they were still alive and with full authority, as both Escriva Alvaro Portillo.
This and other key goals in the original approach of OD responds to an orientation to both I heard them criticize them when referring to other religious institutions.
Viewing, today, by far, to an organization so powerful and so feared, that has absorbed so many young people and was generous with her intention to serve God, makes me very sad. And I ask God every day, by Monsignor Escrivá: for the salvation of his soul.

One thing that I could not understand yet is how a person who preached poverty has bought the noble title of Marquis of Peralta and has motivated his friend Alvaro Portillo to change its name to Alvaro del Portillo. To what end, if his work is supposedly supernatural?
Nor could I understand how it accommodates within the saints so someone at this very moment thousands of people die of hunger and abandonment? This is the saint that the world needs in this century?
D. Javier Echevarria said in an interview something like that (at least as I understood) aid to the poor that makes Opus gives members ensuring that in turn seek social justice through their work. Well, it is a very convenient way to address this problem?
How can a person be now saint who founded a group as sectarian and intolerant as the Opus Dei who has shown his great power handling mainly pre-teens?
In a way, as well as with the title of marquis, not a purchase will be given the "title" saint? only instead of money given in exchange Opus almost military loyalty to the papacy and at more conservative tendencies of the Church? I hope that is not so ...
If Alguen know the answers, please me explain. |
